Cristiano Ronaldo to pay £17m but avoid jail over Spanish tax evasion

The Spanish tax agency has agreed to a deal struck between Cristiano Ronaldo, state prosecutors and the Solicitor General's Office by which the soccer player will pay a fine of almost €19 million and be convicted to a two-year prison sentence.

Despite his sensational move to the Italian giants, Ronaldo still faced several counts of tax fraud after being accused of evading tax in his years in Spain.

In Spanish law, a first-time offender of a non-violent crimes can actually avoid going to prison if their sentences are two years or less unless the offender commits the same crime again during the two-year period. He has denied the allegations. The amount is likely to be only part of the €19 million total he will repay.

The Argentinian originally paid a voluntary "corrective payment" of €5m (£4.4m) to cover the tax owed, plus a fine of €2m (£1.7m) and a further €252,000 (£223,000)) which equated to €400 per day for his prison sentence.

Similar offences have occurred among footballers, with Barcelona's Lionel Messi handed a 21-month suspended prison sentence and James Rodriguez now negotiating a deal with Hacienda for offences dating back to 2014.

Ronaldo is now on holiday following Portugal's World Cup campaign but interrupted his break to complete his €115m move to Juventus earlier this month.

Spanish Tax Authorities have approved the settlement with Cristian Ronaldo over charges of tax evasion.

Barcelona legend Lionel Messi was handed a 21-month prison sentence in 2017 on similar tax fraud charges.
