Wimbledon 2018: It’s just the beginning, says Serena Williams

Angelique Kerber reflects on her stunning 6-3 6-3 win over 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams for her first Wimbledon title.

In the first title-match between two thirtysomethings at Wimbledon since Virginia Wade defeated Betty Stove in 1977, Kerber became the fourth over 30 to win a Grand Slam since the turn of the century, along with Pennetta (2015 US Open), Li (2014 Australian Open) and S.Williams (10 Slam titles).

Williams, just 10 months after giving birth, was on her sport's biggest stage, two sets away from winning the most prestigious title in tennis, when she got worked over by Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 6-3.

It was not to be for Williams, who was attempting to draw level with Margaret Court with 24 Grand Slam titles - and the first since she gave birth to her daughter. I have so much to look forward to.

And it will be no surprise who one of the royals will be cheering on - although she may need to hold back on the celebrations this time.

It also marks the 36-year-old first solo outing with her new sister-in-law, Kate Middleton. She wore special compression leggings as a precaution during Wimbledon, just the fourth tournament of her comeback.

Graf was Kerber's hero when she was growing up in Bremen.

The gorgeous brunette swept her hair back into her trademark bun, as she carried a navy handbag and white fedora hat. "I was really happy to get this far", the athlete began before getting visibly emotional. As for Williams herself, what did fighting out of that bottle-shattered court in Compton do to her, and her mother Oracene, and what has been the toll of the long duel with the cool suspiciousness of the tennis establishment, which persists to this day (she was drug tested five times in June)? I'm really, really sure.

"She was playing very different to me, a lot of slice and playing strong off the forehand and having a good serve", Kerber told reporters.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said.

Also supporting Williams on Centre Court were golfer Tiger Woods and Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton.

"Almost didn't make it, to be honest", Williams said shortly after completing her 6-2, 6-4 semifinal victory over 13th-seeded Julia Goerges on Thursday.

"We tried to improve my tennis by being more aggressive", Kerber explained.

At the final point she ran up to the Royal Box and hugged her coach Wim Fissette, who she turned to after a poor 2017 season dropped her down the rankings.
