One dead after helicopter crashes into Virginia house

Virginia State Police say that Jean Lochak Danylko, 91, is the only reported fatality after a helicopter crashed into a townhouse complex in Williamsburg Sunday afternoon, sparking a massive fire.

The crash is under investigation, but state police released a statement saying "federal, state and local police, with the assistance of the Williamsburg Fire Department, are working to locate and identify the pilot of the helicopter".

As of 9pm search and rescue efforts are still underway, but at least one fatality has been confirmed.

The pilot of the helicopter is still unaccounted for, and emergency workers can not access the crash scene due to instability in the structure.

Paul Leslie, who lives in a building near the crash, told the Williamsburg Yorktown Daily that he heard a helicopter "come overhead" that "basically didn't sound right".

In a Twitter message, the FAA described the helicopter as an R44. "The whole house shook and then I just heard a loud "bam" and the whole house was on fire", Sweeney said. Fire crews were expected to remain on the scene overnight to battle any hot spots in the wrecked building.

She lived in one of the units beneath the crash.

The crash happened near the College of William and Mary Dillard Complex, prompting an alert from the university.

State police and other investigators are likely to be at the site for the next several days, Anaya said.
