Ex-NBA player dies after police shootout

When police arrived, Honeycutt shot at police who shot back.

This morning, it was confirmed that the suspect, who had barricaded himself inside the home, was found dead.

According to LAPD, a male suspect in his 20s, later identified as Honeycutt, was involved in an "Officer-involved shooting" at Riverside Drive and Tyrone Avenue in Sherman Oaks, Calif. Police reported to Honeycutt's residence at 5 p.m. local on Friday after Honeycutt's mother called, saying her son was acting erratically. A SWAT team later entered the home and found Honeycutt dead at the scene. Escoto explained that Honeycutt had been playing basketball in Russian Federation and was struggling to adapt to life there.

U.S. media report this was Honeycutt's residence in the Sherman Oaks area of Los Angeles.

Rubenstein noted that "no officers were injured and it was unknown if the suspect had been struck by the officers gunfire" at the time. The suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Im said. That seems to be the case with former UCLA basketball player Tyler Honeycutt who apparently took his own life early Saturday morning.

Honeycutt, 27, was the No. 28 ranked player in the country coming out of Sylmar High School in California. He was a second-round pick by the Kings in the 2011 National Basketball Association draft and played in 24 games over two seasons before continuing his professional career overseas.

"Investigators from our Force Investigation Division are at scene conducting a thorough investigation and we will provide more details as they become available", the tweet said.

He had been playing overseas since 2013. He returned to Khimki last year after a year at Turkish team Anadolu Efes.
