Serena Williams wins first match at Wimbledon since giving birth

She did need six match points to finish off the Dutchwoman but a netted backhand finally sealed the American's passage into round two.

Williams shared a photo of Olympia Alexis sitting on the court at Wimbledon during her training, writing, 'Go Mummy!'

"If it's the shorter days, now that I'm not playing doubles in this event, I have the day off, I think that will help".

Rus played her part in a competitive first-round clash with some sweet forehands down the line, however Williams would not be denied as she powered to a 7-5 6-3 victory.

But Serena has a problem, a odd distaste for an unglamorous part of her job: drug-testing.

Apart from adjusting to her role "as a working mom", the seven-time champion also had to get used to hearing something "new" as she was addressed as "Mrs Williams" for the first time at the grasscourt major following her marriage to Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian previous year. I expect to go out there.

She added: "I haven't played a tremendous amount of tennis since I had the baby. I'm going to do whatever I can to make sure that I'm prepared, in the best shape possible, hopefully playing some good tennis by the time the US Open comes around".

"I'm happy she chose to take that route and not walk away from the game, which would have been totally fine. I remember I struggled early on a lot", said Federer.

But everything else was familiar for the Swiss star who cruised past world number 57 Lajovic in just 79 minutes.

After just 20 minutes to complete the first set, Federer went on to fire 35 winners past Lajovic, breaking serve five times, setting up a second round encounter against either Lukas Lacko of Slovakia or French qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.

"I have such high expectations of myself", said Williams, whose 23 Grand Slam singles championships include seven at Wimbledon, so she was seeded 25th even though her ranking is 181st following an extended absence.

The world No.2 is enjoying a renaissance as he chases a 21st grand slam title and a record-extending ninth Wimbledon, 15 years after his first. "I came in here expecting that maybe I wouldn't get a seed".

Caroline Wozniacki safely navigated her way past Varvara Lepchenko, winning 6-0 6-3, just 48 hours after claiming the Nature Valley International in Eastbourne.

Magdalena Rybarikova was the first seed to lose as she was beaten 7-5 6-3 by Sorana Cirstea while 22nd seed Anastasija Sevastova was ousted 6-1 2-6 6-4 by Camila Giorgi. "In the future I'll be able to play a little bit better".

"How is it I'm getting tested five times?" "Until I read that article I didn't realize it was such a discrepancy with me as well as against the other players that they listed, at least the American players - both male and female".

Serena's fellow tennis-playing mother, Victoria Azarenka, a former world number one and two-time semi-finalist, defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russian Federation 7-6 (7/4), 6-3.

Three-time Grand Slam victor Stan Wawrinka returned to the All England Club in style, ousting sixth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov 1-6 7-6 (3) 7-6 (5) 6-4.
