Pensions and Pemex to figure in Lopez Obrador's Mexico plans

Another place that's felt the cold wind of President Trump's threatened trade wars is the US's neighbour, Mexico. "I confess that I have a legitimate ambition: I want to go down in history as a good president of Mexico", said Lopez Obrador, who had lost in the previous two presidential elections.

On the call, Lopez Obrador offered to help lower immigration to the United States in return for help on economic development in Mexico. More than 250,000 people have been killed and more than 30,000 have gone missing since former president Felipe Calderon sent troops into the streets 12 years ago in an effort to neutralise drug cartels whose power was beginning to rival that of the state.

Gustavo Felix, 56, said he had only hoped Lopez Obrador's coalition - led by his party, Morena - would not win a majority in Congress.

"We are going to achieve a peaceful transformation, without violence", Obrador said.

"This new national project will seek to establish an authentic democracy and we do not intend to establish a dictatorship", Lopez Obrador said. "I wish I could have joined the crowds packed into the Zocalo last night in Mexico City to celebrate this historic moment", said Corbyn, using both English and Spanish, in a video posted on his official Facebook page.

The survey by El Financiero showed Lopez Obrador with 49 percent of the vote.

Jose Antonio Meade, the presidential candidate from the governing Institutional Revolutionary Party, told Lopez Obrador at a recent debate: "You want to forgive the unforgivable".

Exit polls gave its candidate Claudia Sheinbaum as the new Mexico City mayor, while the party was also expected to win governorships in the states of Chiapas, Tabasco and Morelos. He won 53 percent of the vote in the election and has the political capital necessary to end decades of passive foreign policy and re-assert Mexico's sovereignty.

He said contracts obtained under energy reforms passed under President Enrique Pena Nieto will be scrutinized for any corruption or illegality, but otherwise contracts will be honored.

The leftist politicians joined a handful of world leaders, artists and politicians around the world congratulating Lopez Obrador and his party over their victory in the presidency and both legislative chambers.

Lopez Obrador has promised to stop corruption in Mexico's government.

Lopez Obrador, meanwhile, said in an interview Monday he would speak with President Trump to try to "reach an understanding" on Trump's proposed border wall and other issues deeply dividing the two countries.

Lopez Obrador won thanks to overwhelming anger at the status quo and his success at presenting himself as an agent of change. "We'll be looking in the coming weeks for indications of the size and nature of any fiscal stimulus or signs of a more interventionist energy policy".

Mexican presidents are limited by law to a single term.

According to the latest census figures, there are a little more than 26,000 people of Mexican descent living in Alaska. Lopez Obrador's tall promises are also tempered by a degree of realism - he has said he will continue to negotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. He later joined the Party of the Democratic Revolution and more recently formed his own party, the National Regeneration Movement - known as MORENA.

"They will inherit the talks where they are - now at a standstill, largely given USA recalcitrance to compromise with its neighbours", she said, noting that Mexico has imposed its own retaliatory tariffs and the new administration would likely follow the same approach.

Lopez Obrador will take office on December 1.
