Massive brawl breaks out during Australia-Philippines basketball game

Maker was one of four Australian players to be ejected following the fight, which saw the third quarter play out with only three Philippines players remaining in the game.

The game, taking place in a Philippine arena north of Manila, ended with Australia winning by default 89 to 53.

For those who don't believe basketball can be a violent sport, allow us to introduce you to the worldwide game.

"Whilst we accept our responsibility for our role in last night's incident, what we don't accept is the action whereby fans and officials actually get involved in the fray", Moore told reporters in Brisbane.

An elbow thrown by Philippines player June Mar Fajardo turned into an all-out brawl. The nine Filipino players tossed were Blatche, Castro, Pogoy, Japeth Aguilar, Jeth Rosario, Terrence Bill Romeo, Matthew Wright, Calvin Abueva and Carl Bryan Cruz.

Australia's Daniel Kickert's retaliation on Pogoy sparked an all-in brawl which Fox Sports commentator Matt Russell described as "sickening", and it included punches, elbows, kicks and objects including a chair hurled at players.

"The teams are in different ends of the field of play, with the referees in the middle".

While the Australian bench were held back, their Filipino counterparts emptied on to the floor to take part in the ensuing melee, leaving the Boomer players significantly outnumbered. "It is not only a universal human reaction in a team sport, but for those who have played the game, looking after each other is part of the brotherhood among team members", he said. The teams lawyers have been briefed.

"We find that absolutely unacceptable". The decision will be communicated in the coming days.

Scheduled post-match press conferences for both teams were cancelled in the aftermath of the incident.

The Australian national team issued an apology for its behavior soon after the game.

The incident started when Goulding, who scored a game-high 20 points, was felled when struck by Philippines guard Roger Pogoy off the ball.
