I 'probably won't' ask Supreme Court nominees about Roe v. Wade

Republican Sen. Susan Collins, a key vote for President Donald Trump's upcoming pick for the Supreme Court, has warned that she would oppose any nominee who would consider overturning the ruling in Roe v. Wade that legalizes abortion.

"I'm going to have an in-depth conversation with the nominee and I believe very much that Roe v. Wade is settled law as it has been described by Chief Justice [John] Roberts", Collins said.

Trump said he plans to interview six or seven people from his candidate list and will make an announcement of his pick on July 9.

Nearly every Republican in the Senate, which will confirm the successful nominee, is expected to vote with Trump as a matter of course.

He has the backing of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Republican. The Maine senator said she would only back a judge who would show respect for settled law such as the 45-year-old Roe decision, which has always been an anathema to conservatives. He says both would be threatened by a conservative Trump nominee.

CNSNews.com asked Paul on Friday whether he wants President Donald Trump to nominate a judge who thinks "an unborn child with a beating heart is a "person" entitled to equal protection of the law under the 14th Amendment".

Collins said she and fellow Republican Sen.

But speculation on Supreme Court nominees has often proved short-sighted, so the Center made a decision to post the disclosures that it has obtained so far, either by our own staff, or in a couple cases, by Fix the Court, an advocacy group arguing that the court needs to be "more open and honest". The majority of American women support common-sense abortion limits, and we deserve judicial representation.

The nominee will express respect for honoring precedent, no doubt and dodge questions about specific cases like Roe.

Schumer said that while Democrats don't control the Senate - Republicans have a 51-49 edge - most senators back abortion rights.

Trump's successful confirmation of his second Supreme Court nominee in under two years could help seal his legacy among social conservatives who have been clamoring for Justice Anthony Kennedy's retirement in the hopes of replacing a pivotal vote on the court with a solidly conservative replacement.

"You don't overturn precedent unless there's a good reason", Graham said. Even Leonard Leo of the conservative Federalist Society, who is advising Trump on his Court pick, has noted the importance of precedent.

"No, I don't think it's fair to say that, and here's why".

Former Justice Department official Tom Dupree said Murkowski's decisionmaking should be handled "delicately" because she is one of the only senators to ever win a seat through a "write-in campaign" rather than being printed on the ballot.
