Unusual lump on woman's face turns out to be a live worm

The disturbing discovery is made worse by the fact that the woman monitored the lump as it moved to different spots on her face. In a series of pics, she tracked as it moved across her face.

The 32-year-old from Russian Federation first noticed the small bump below her left eye. Her upper lip was bulging 10 days after that.

Adding to the already grim situation, the worm can live up to two years in the human body if it is not removed.

The moving lump on her face turned out to be a worm under her skin, specifically the parasitic worm named Dirofilaria repens.

The woman documented the different lumps she had been witnessing by taking selfies in order to keep a track of the roving blemishes.

Finally, when her lip swelled up due to the lump, the woman went to see a doctor and was in for a rude surprise.

"She had recently traveled to a rural area outside Moscow and recalled being frequently bitten by mosquitoes".

Here's something uncomfortable to think about: A worm moving around under the skin on your face. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that D. repens are not found in the USA, but the country does harbor relatives D. immitis, which cause heartworm disease in dogs, and D. tenuis, which affect raccoons.

All this while, the 32-year-old patient felt an itching and burning sensation.

Removed after two weeks: The worm was removed using forceps and the woman made a full recovery.

Generally, though, the worm causes "no serious harm to humans (but certainly to the dogs)", Kurtzhals said. The thread-like worm naturally infects animals such as dogs, cats, foxes, and other wild mammals, but humans may become accidental hosts.

The woman reported having no other symptoms.

The parasite, a cousin of heartworm, is found in Europe, Africa and Asia and can grow to as long as six inches.

Medical experts agree this parasite is just another reason to do what you can to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

The report details how the woman from Russian Federation became the host of a parasitic worm after being bitten by a mosquito.

The lead author of the report in NEJM, Vladimir Kartashev, an infectious disease expert at Rostov State Medical University in Rostov-na-Donu, Russia, told The Washington Post in an email that D. repens is an "emerging disease" in the western part of the former Soviet Union and certain parts of Europe.
