Melania visits detained immigrant children

The First Lady, who slammed her husband for his controversial "zero tolerance" immigration policy that has seen 2,000 kids detained as a result of their parents trying to cross the Mexican borer illegally, left Washington and flew to McAllen for the visit to observe the immigration crisis.

The House of Representatives will vote on a Republican immigration bill aimed at halting the taking of immigrant children from parents being detained for illegally entering the US.

Grisham previously said in a statement to CNN on Sunday, June 17, that Melania "hates to see children separated from their families" and "believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart".

While Trump told a Wednesday campaign crowd that he'd fixed the family separation issue, his administration has not revealed a plan to reunite at least 1995 children USA officials separated from their families.

In a sign of the broadening scope of the crisis, the Department of Health and Human Services asked the Pentagon to prepare to house up to 20,000 unaccompanied migrant children on military bases, a USA official said.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order that will end the separation of migrant families on the southern US border. The words, "Welcome! First Lady" were written in black marker across the red and white bars.

"I'm glad I'm here and I'm looking forward to seeing and meeting children, but first of all let me begin to recognize each of you and thanking you for all that you do, for your heroic work that you do every day and what you do for those children", Melania Trump said.

An avid viewer of cable television news, Trump recognized that the family separation issue was a growing political problem, White House sources said.

Visiting another classroom, Mrs. Trump asked children where they were from and how long they'd been at the center where staff said children typically spend between 42 and 45 days. "She wants to see a realistic view of what's happening".

Little more than an hour after the story was first posted, the outlet was forced to update its story, clarifying that the Trump administration was not actually suspending prosecutions for parents of migrant children, but rather instructing Border Patrol agents to stop sending parents with children to federal courthouses for prosecution.

"We're essentially hiding behind the system and gridlock and using it as an excuse to dehumanize people and literally tear apart parents and children", he said.

"No one wants to separate families but Americans should rest assured that minors who are referred to [federal government] funded facilities are well cared for", tweeted HHS Secretary Alex Azar Wednesday evening.

"This was 100 percent her idea".

Lawyers filed a memorandum to a settlement in California that governs how children are handled when they are caught crossing the USA border illegally.

Meanwhile, there were signs that the administration was dialing back its "zero tolerance" policy, for now.
