Trump seizes on IG report to tout firing Comey

The president was responding to questions about the 568-page report released Thursday by the Department of Justice (DOJ) inspector general (IG) concerning the 2016 FBI investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server and address to conduct official US diplomatic business. But the report concluded that those private anti-Trump comments didn't taint the probe.

"The IG Report is a total disaster for Comey, his minions and sadly, the FBI", Mr Trump wrote.

Giuliani on Fox News Friday morning went so far as to suggest that both Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein should say "enough is enough" and should "turn to investigate the corrupt investigators and clean up the Federal Bureau of Investigation".

"I did a great service to the people in firing him. The conclusions are reasonable, even though I disagree with some", he said.

The report by Horowitz on the FBI's Clinton probe is due to be released after 2 p.m. (1800 GMT).

"We did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that improper considerations, including political bias, directly affected the specific investigative actions we reviewed", Horowitz said.

The report criticized Comey for publicly announcing his recommendation against criminal charges for Clinton.

A Justice Department watchdog report has turned into Washington's latest Rorschach test, with President Donald Trump and his critics each cherry picking what they want to see from its findings to either discredit or defend investigators conducting the probe into the White House.

"We found that it was extraordinary and insubordinate for Comey to do so, and we found none of his reasons to be a persuasive basis for deviating from well-established Department policies in a way intentionally created to avoid supervision by department leadership over his actions", the report says.

Strzok was removed from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation a year ago after Horowitz's office discovered anti-Trump text messages between him and FBI lawyer Lisa Page. The special counsel is preparing a report about the president's actions while in office and potential obstruction of justice, and Mueller needs to interview Trump as the last step, according to one person familiar with the discussions who spoke with the Post.

Trump said he did not have plans to suspend the Mueller investigation, and he repeated his contention that the inquiry was being conducted by people with conflicts of interest.

Both Strzok and Page worked on the Clinton probe.

Read the report's executive summary here. The male agent was one of two agents who had interviewed Clinton for the investigation.

The FBI obtained a warrant nine days before the presidential election to review those emails, found on the laptop of former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y. - the husband of top Clinton aide Huma Abedin - and ultimately determined there was nothing that changed its original conclusion. At least among Trump's hardline supporters, the response would inevitably refer back to Clinton and the email controversy. Comey said had he known earlier about the laptop's import, it might have affected his decision to notify Congress.
