Driver detained after crashing taxi into pedestrians in Red Square

The area was packed with World Cup fans, with the taxi hitting a number of pedestrians.

Mexican nationals were among the injured, it said.

They added that the taxi driver likely lost control of the vehicle. Eight people have sought medical assistance, the Moscow police said. "He was shouting: "It wasn't me".

Citing an unnamed source, Russia's Interfax news agency reported the cab driver fell asleep at the wheel and accidentally pressed the accelerator pedal.

Asked if the driver appeared drunk, the witness said: "No, he wasn't drunk".

The accident took place on Ilinka Street, about 200m from Red Square and Moscow's famous GUM shopping arcade.

The agency that monitors Moscow's traffic safety said the driver is a citizen of the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan who told police that the crash was not intentional.

Russian media has said one woman was in a "serious but not critical condition", but that nobody else was seriously injured following the incident.

Russian Federation is now hosting the World Cup, and promised "unprecedented" security measures in all cities hosting the games.
