Stage set for landmark Kim-Trump summit in Singapore

But it was only Monday morning in North Korea that the government news agency reported that Kim was in Singapore, had met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and would meet Trump on Tuesday.

Around twenty minutes earlier, Trump's top North Korea negotiator, ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, arrived with one adviser, smiling at a scrum of television cameras and reporters gathered outside the hotel.

North Korea's state media has yet to report Kim's trip to Singapore.

According to accounts of the G-7 meeting, officials from other members of the bloc confronted Trump with a torrent of statistics about the importance of the USA -authored global order and the merits of free trade.

Trump was received by Lee at the presidential palace Istana, where they were expected to discuss everything from the summit preparations to the US' tariff threats.

He told Al Jazeera: "A meeting where the optics are positive, meaning Trump gets a handshake with Kim Jong-un and they both go home agreeing to some kind of denuclearisation deal would go a long way domestically for President Trump as much as it would for the chairman of the state committee".

News that U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited North Korea was front page news with a big photo of him shaking Kim's hand the following day in the ruling party newspaper, the Rodong Sinmun.

The jet landed at the airport Sunday afternoon amid huge security precautions on the city-state island.

A CNN team was on the scene as Kim arrived at the St Regis Hotel Sunday.

"I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people, "Trump said at a press conference in Canada before departing the G-7 summit for Singapore".

Trump, who had said the young dictator had a "one-time shot" to bring his country in from the cold with the summit, arrived hours later on Air Force One at Singapore's Paya Lebar Air Base.

But in early 2018, North Korea began attempts to improve relations with South Korea by sending a team and delegates to the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

Reportedly, the test was conducted during the time when Donald Trump made a decision to tighten economic sanctions against North Korea and raised the possibility of military action.

Tuesday's meeting will be the first between a sitting U.S. president and a leader of North Korea, whose nuclear and ballistic missile ambitions have raised global concerns and seen tensions soar.

"We have a very interesting meeting in particular tomorrow, and I think things can work out very nicely", he said.

Sen. Bob Menendez of New Jersey says: "To the extent that Kim Jong Un has already gone from worldwide pariah to being normalized internationally, you have to say that he's had some success here". We appreciate the working together with North Korea.

Trump's high-risk meeting with Kim is scheduled for 9 a.m. Tuesday, or 9 p.m. June 11 on the U.S. East Coast.
