Bourdain's death means loss of a voice for immigrant workers

Chefs Eric Ripert (L) and Anthony Bourdain attend a screening of "Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown: Japan with Masa" in New York City.

We've now received more details about Bourdain's passing.

"I was in a cranky mood after my last restaurant closed and felt no reason not to tell the truth about a business I both love and have mixed emotions about", Bourdain told CBS2 in 1999. In the preface to the latest edition of "Kitchen Confidential", Bourdain wrote of his shock at the success of his book, which he managed to write by getting up at 5 a.m. before his kitchen shifts.

He also added that he wanted to extend his condolences to the family of Kate Spade, the fashion designer who took her own life earlier this week. The award-winning 61-year-old Central Intelligence Agency graduate was on location in France filming a segment for his hit series Parts Unknown, when he was found in his hotel room Friday morning by friend and chef Eric Ripert.

Bun Cha Huong Lien restaurant in the Vietnamese capital's leafy Old Quarter soared to fame after the 2016 sit-down between Obama and Bourdain for his CNN show.

Ripert was in France with Anthony to film an upcoming episode of the award-winning show Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown. CNN confirmed Bourdain's passing in a statement, listing the cause of death as suicide.

Padma Lakshmi spoke about her bond with Anthony Bourdain and how the celebrity chef was a champion for women. "You have changed our lives forever".

"Thank you for bringing a respectful view to the people of Palestine, Libya, Iran and more".

"When you ask everybody and not just people you might suspect, you double the number you detect", he said.

As for Africa, Bourdain declared the continent, "one of the best arguments for travel I can think of", and lauded its ability to exist as a "functioning multicultural, multilingual, extraordinarily TOLERANT society".

The network described Bourdain as a "unique storyteller". He spent years as a line cook and sous chef at restaurants in the Northeast before becoming executive chef at Manhattan's Brasserie Les Halles.

The suicide rate in the United States keeps climbing, it's up by 25 percent since 1999.
