World No.1 Halep slides past Muguruza, into third RG final

Halep who will also keep hold of the world number one ranking as a result of the victory, made a flying start and was 5-0 in quick time as Muguruza made some wild errors. She lost the title match at the Australian Open in January.

A win on Thursday would move Stephens to No. 4 in the rankings.

Keys slipped two breaks down in the second but although she pulled one back Stephens served out for the match.

Sharapova takes out frustration of Muguruza defeat by blasting Serena over comments on her autobiography, says her book is honest.

Halep spent an hour longer on court than Muguruza in their respective quarter-finals on Wednesday, needing three sets to beat German 12th seed Angelique Kerber.

The 2012 and 2014 Paris champion, who missed the 2016 tournament because of a doping ban and a year ago when she was refused a wild card, was broken six times, committed 27 unforced errors and won just five points on her own serve in the second set. She was in Chicago with coach Kamau Murray, working her way back from a foot injury that required surgery and sidelined her for 11 months. The victor earns a berth in the final at Roland Garros - plus the No 1 ranking that now belongs to Halep.

In Thursday's other semi-final, US Open champion Stephens will take on fellow American and close friend Keys who she beat 6-3, 6-0 in the final in NY last September. Some of those matches were very defining for me. "But before that, we are not going to be weird and awkward and make it, like, weird for each other", said Stephens, who was close to going out in the third round to Camila Giorgi before winning 8-6 in a deciding set.

In full swing: Garbine Muguruza hardly broke a sweat en route to her first victory over Maria Sharpova.

Now the 26-year-old Romanian will bid to go a step further than she has ever gone before by beating American Sloane Stephens in Saturday's title match.

"When you're writing an autobiography, I don't think there is any reason to write anything that's not true", Sharapova said.

"There is a lot of times where I feel like she made the ball by a centimeter", Keys continued, "and I was missing it". She loves clay. She loves Roland Garros.

It was also a match which witnessed a colossal 99 unforced errors.

Keys is 0-4 in sets against Stephens in previous meetings, with the latter claiming wins over her friend on the hard courts of Miami in 2015 and US Open in 2017. Muguruza, who won the French Open in 2016 but didn't make it out of sectionals past year, is continuing a fantastic run of tennis at Roland-Garros.
