Smith leads weather-delayed U.S. Women's Open

She won the Women's British Open in 2016 and is coming off a victory at the Kingsmill Championship in May.

A four-under front-nine and she led by seven shots with nine holes to go.

But a triple bogey on No. 10 cut the lead to four and rocked her confidence, especially with her 3-wood. Jutanugarn admitted after the round she didn't felt completely comfortable on the tee box. "I'm really honoured to join the list of winners before me".

After the errant tee shot on No. 10, which soared into the right-side hazard, Jutanugarn said she was "a little bit scared my next shot".

"Even in my playoff I said to my caddie, 'Should I try to hit three-wood?' He's like, 'If you ask me this question you shouldn't try".

Another bogey followed at the 12th. "Her length is just one part of her game". Kim birdied the 14th to take the upper hand, while Jutanugarn made par.

The victory was Jutanugarn's second in three weeks and her second major championship.

"It's kind of fun seeing that", she said.

She has a way to go, but nonetheless took delight at seeing her name atop the leaderboard the entire round.

"I think at the end of the four days not many people will be there because it always happen in the U.S. Open", Ciganda said. Didn't hang her head in despair when she hit fliers out of the Bermuda rough. After almost four hours, play resumed, though just for an hour before the LPGA announced the round was suspended due to inclement weather and would resume at 6:45 a.m. local time on Saturday. Finding the bunker on her approach to 18, she failed to get up-and-down for par and the collapse was complete.

When Jutanugarn rose to No. 1 in the world for the first time last summer, she admittedly wasn't ready for it. Back-to-back bogeys to close from the Thai, for an 11 under par aggregate, conceded the two-stroke lead restored at the 16th and meant the play-off which all onlookers, in reality, expected her to lose.

"The first tee shot she hit was the first really bad tee shot I saw her hit in two days", Faxon, who was working at the championship for Fox Sports, told Reuters.

"I feel like I want to inspire the kids", she said.

Kim wasted no time taking the lead in the playoff.

So do Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott, the Vision 54 coaches who work with her. He missed the green from the fairway on the 18th on the first extra hole and had to scramble for par.

On the fourth playoff hole at 18, both players went into greenside bunkers. She missed the green long with her third shot and botched a chip to leave herself with a lengthy par attempt.
