Brazil legend Rivaldo: 'Fred right fit for Manchester United'

Fred, who is part of Brazil's World Cup squad, is set to become United chief coach Jose Mourinho's first signing of the summer.

Manchester United have made their first signing of the summer as the club confirmed that Brazil worldwide Fed has agreed to join them from Shakhtar Donetsk.

He made a return to Shakhtar in 2015 after a season away in Brazil and scored a further 21 goals for the club while also adding more winner's medals to his cabinet.

Willian spent five-and-a-half years with Shakhtar before leaving in January 2013 for a short spell with Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, while Fred arrived in Donetsk from Brazilian side Internacional five months later.

Handed his debut by Dunga in 2014, Fred's worldwide career was disrupted after testing positive for the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide during the 2015 Copa America.

Fred will join Manchester United this summer, the Red Devils have confirmed.

But he has failed to light up the Premier League amid reports of numerous issues.

The Brazil global dropped a huge hint that he was Manchester United-bound at the weekend before swiftly deleting a tweet revealing his location.

United will doubtless be delighted to have confirmed the signing of Fred before the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as the deal could have been complicated had he impressed in Russian Federation. One ex-teammate told the South China Morning Post: "Fred's a good player skilfully, though he's not physically strong or quick". He rates youngster Scott McTominay, but Fred is an experienced Champions League player and now a Brazilian global. The 25-year old can be used in a three-man midfield along with Pogba and Matic.

"He is a wonderful player", the former world footballer of the year said.
