Red Sox To Cut Ties With Hanley Ramirez

The Twins could consider platooning Ramirez with Morrison at first base, especially if Joe Mauer is going to be out for an extended period of time.

It's even more unusual the Sox have been hitting him at the top of the order right up until Thursday, when he batted second for them, which could signal a disconnect between front office and field level coaching staff.

Moreland, a lot more productive per plate appearance than Ramirez was once Ramirez began to cool off, will play more and Swihart will get more looks as well.

The Red Sox will have seven days to either trade or release the 34-year-old Ramirez.

There is a financial incentive for the Red Sox to make this move. In doing so, the Red Sox will walk away from more than $15 million remaining on Ramirez's salary through the duration of this season. Ramirez tweeted a farewell to Red Sox fans on Friday afternoon.

They'll never say the option was a factor - a grievance from the MLBPA would surely follow - but ultimately, the Red Sox decided Ramirez wasn't worth that headache.

By designating Ramirez for assignment, Cora sent that message loud and clear.

"Hanley's OK. He's not Mitch Moreland", Dombrowski said.

Ramirez, after a hot April (.341, three homers, .906 OPS), was struggling in May (.163, 3, .500). Ramirez made his big league debut with Boston that season, playing two games, and was the centerpiece in a trade with the Marlins that November that returned pitcher Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to the Red Sox.

Dombrowski told reporters that manager Alex Cora suggested the move to designate Ramirez. It's tough. I haven't spoken with him yet. The deal contains a $22 million option that would become guaranteed if he has 1,050 plate appearances in 2017-18 combined and passed a physical at the end of the season. Everyone knows about my relationship with him.

The reasoning, in part, was both players were good contact hitters. I care about him and his family. He played 105 games (.249, 12 home runs).

This is surprising for a few reasons.

Remember in 2015 when Ramirez was so bad in left field there were questions over whether or not he had a place on the roster, then he finally left the team with an injury and went home to Miami before the season was even over? His agent asked them to trade him last week, and according to NBC Sports Boston, the Red Sox tried but were asking too much in return and couldn't find a partner. I'm excited about it.
