Syria's Assad Travels To Sochi For Talks With Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin met Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad on Thursday and said their "military success" in Syria allowed for a large-scale "political process" leading to the withdrawal of foreign forces and the country's reconstruction.

"After the military success (of the Syrian army in recent months) supplementary conditions have been created which favour the start of a political process on a major scale", Mr Putin said in a statement released by the Kremlin following the meeting in the southern Russian city of Sochi.

Russian Federation has been involved in Syria's civil war since September 2015.

Assad, in turn, congratulated Putin on his re-election in March and reported "many positive changes" in Syria, including the reduction of territory controlled by insurgents and the return of "hundreds of thousands of Syrians" displaced by the conflict.

"The next task, of course, is the economic recovery and humanitarian aid for those people in a hard situation", Putin added.

In keeping with a Kremlin assertion, Assad mentioned "stability is bettering" in Syria, "opening the door to the political course of we began a while in the past". "I have always said, and now I repeat once again, that we always enthusiastically support the political process, which should go hand in hand with the fight against terrorism", Assad said.

"We all know it won't be simple as a result of some global locations are not looking for stability to return to Syria". Though the meeting occurred during the day, according to a video recording, Russian state television broadcast news of the visit only late Thursday, for reasons that were unclear.

Putin is scheduled to meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday and French President Emmanuel Macron next week.
