Senate votes to protect net neutrality

Back in December, the FCC confirmed internet users' fears when it voted to repeal net neutrality rules, but yesterday saw the US Senate vote to overturn the decision. "I will continue working across the aisle to move this measure forward and support a level playing field for all of our people and businesses", Hassan added. Three Republican senators voted with Democrats: Sen. The rules are officially expected to expire on 11 June of this year and with United States midterm elections approaching, lawmakers may be considering their position ahead of countrywide voting.

Senate Democrats, led by Ed Markey of MA, used the Congressional Review Act-an oversight tool that permits Congress to repeal rulings made by agencies such as the FCC-to force Wednesday's vote.

This is probably a tactical error for Trump; net-neutrality is one of those issues that Republicans have shied away from, because they recognize that although it's probably popular with most of their base voters (who wants to pay more for worse internet?) it's not popular with most of their donors. Some of those internet service providers, including Comcast, Time-Warner and Verizon, are among the largest and wealthiest companies in America. Meanwhile, the White House has been vocal of its support for FCC head Ajit Pai's move to reverse the regulations set under the previous administration.

"Outside Washington, net neutrality rules are popular", Public Knowledge Vice President Chris Lewis stated. Unlike their elected representatives, Americans realize that net neutrality is not a government intrusion into the marketplace; rather these regulations simply codify norms and behaviors which have made the Internet the dynamic vehicle of innovation, participation and collaboration we have come to rely upon for commerce, culture and democratic communication.

Sen. Schatz: Well, you never know until these things go to the vote, but we'd been in contact with Senator Kennedy and Senator Murkowski before the vote, so although you never know until the vote happens, we had warning that we might have exceeded people's expectations. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) at a press conference after a Senate vote to maintain net neutrality rules.

On May 16, the Senate voted 52-47 in favor of overturning the FCC's net neutrality ruling. "It is telling that while every Senate Democrat supported this no-brainer legislation, Republicans presented near-unanimous opposition".

The new rule on internet service providers passed by the FCC take effect June 10. Mayor Ron Nirenberg said S.A.'s measure would ensure residents are treated equitably when they buy online access - a 21st Century necessity. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) on Thursday. Net neutrality also is essential to the hundreds of thousands of union members who earn a living creating the content we all stream over the internet.
