United States threatens sanctions on Europe for business with Iran

Donald Trump's national security advisor refused on Sunday to say whether the United States would punish European companies that do not cease their business operations in Iran by the end of this year.

Mr. Bolton, a National Security Council spokesman said, consulted widely with his colleagues and European allies on Iran.

White House National Security adviser John Bolton said U.S. sanctions on European companies that maintain business dealings with Iran were "possible".

White House national security adviser John Bolton says "regime change" in Iran is not now part of the administration's policy, despite his past suggestions that the United States should push for a new government in Tehran.

When asked whether the United States might impose sanctions on European companies that continue to do business with Iran, Bolton told CNN: "It's possible".

"It depends on the conduct of other governments", he said.

But I think the Europeans will see that it's in their interest, ultimately, to come long with us. Boeing, which signed a contract to supply new planes to Iran's aging aircraft fleet, stands to lose around $20 billion now that the USA is reimposing sanctions.

He made the remarks in an interview with Fox News, after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the deal on Tuesday.

"The second avenue is looking at Europe's financial independence - what can we do to give Europe more financial tools allowing it to be independent from the United States?"

Macron's office said the two leaders spoke on Saturday and the French leader expressed his "great concern about stability" in the region.

"I heard one of the primary industry representatives postulating that it might mean, if nothing else, that it's more hard to increase exports to iran who, of course, used to be a much larger trading partner of New Zealand than they are even now".

Another is that Trump's decision sets U.S. Middle Eastern policy on a different course from the United States' Western European allies, who are still committed to upholding the deal.

However, he added the USA "sanctions regime that is now in place is very clear about what the requirements are", hinting that Washington is prepared to go after European companies and allies if they try to continue to do business with Iran.

Despite the USA exit, Britain and Iran expressed their commitment to ensuring that the accord is upheld, according to a statement released by British Prime Minister Theresa May's office. Bolton said on ABC's "This Week".

"I think at the moment there's some feeling in Europe - they're really surprised we got out of it, really surprised at the reimposition of strict sanctions". Mogherini said on Friday that "it seems that screaming, shouting, insulting and bully, systematically destroying and dismantling everything that is already in place, is the mood of our times.[But we have to] move on from the 'I win, you lose. approach".

Altmaier said Germany wished to avoid "a coil of escalation" in transatlantic exchange connections.
