Food drive set for Saturday

The Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive provides individuals and families in need, support through basic nutrition. The nnual food drive is the largest national single-day effort that benefits millions of Americans who struggle to put food on the table.

"As letter carriers we look forward to being about to help make it easy for the customers to donate by delivering the food to the food bank", Peterson said. Place any non-perishable food items inside a paper bag or blue plastic bag delivered to your mailbox. "This lasts them through the summer", Hoffman said, explaining that food pantries tend to be taxed even more during summer months when kids are out of school and don't have access to their usual school lunches.

Hopefully there are non-perishable food items in your pantry that you can afford to donate.

Last year, letter carriers collected 75.3 million pounds of food from 10,000 cities and towns. "There's a lot of people that have a need for food, so if you drive around this neighborhood, there's a lot of good neighbors, and we just want to be part of it", Paulaus says.

Letter carriers are collecting more than mail today.

In Parkersburg, carriers will drop off collections at the Camden Avenue Church of Christ where volunteers will weigh and sort the collections for the Wood County Food Co-Op, according to drive coordinator Shelly Elschlager of Branch 481. That was the third-highest amount since the food drive began in 1993.

This postal drive brought in 6,000 pounds of donated items a year ago.

The food bank serves 11 counties in Northwestern and Central Pennsylvania.

Regardless of the turn out, Near said the extra work is well worth it if it helps them stamp out hunger.

"Usually we are getting between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds of food", said Raymond.
