Trump Optimistic About Summit With North Korean Leader

Trump said in a Twitter message on Thursday announcing the date and place of the long-anticipated talks.

The safe return of three USA citizens from North Korean prisons should remind the White House of the power of diplomacy, say experts.

"Frankly, we didn't think it was going to happen and it did", Trump said after thanking Kim for releasing the men.

"Every time they hear news related to the summit, they stay awake all night", Kuk said.

Heo told the network the defections were a South Korea government-sanctioned "luring and kidnapping", a statement that would support North Korea's claims the former administration of jailed President Park Geun-hye seized the North Koreans who were working in a restaurant in China at the time of their disappearance. Simultaneously, Iran had released five American prisoners.

Washington is likely to persuade Pyongyang to give up its nuclear weapons after the two leaders exchanged fiery rhetoric past year over North Korea's attempts to build a nuclear weapon that could reach the United States.

Kim Dong Chul, a former Virginia resident who had reportedly run a company on North Korea's border with Russian Federation, had been sentenced in April 2016 to 10 years in prison with hard labor after being convicted of espionage.

After their meeting with the US President, the men were expected to go to Walter Reed Medical Centre in Maryland for further evaluation and medical treatment, according to White House Press Secretary Lindsay Walters.

The Trump administration has made clear it regarded the arrests as politically motivated, and had been bitterly critical of North Korea's refusal to grant consular access to the three, other than a brief visit by a US envoy last June.

The highly public ceremony surrounding the ex-prisoners arrival in DC and Trump's political comments stood in marked contrast to the the State Department's earlier efforts to keep the three men sheltered from the press and even from other USA officials. His death escalated US-North Korea tensions.

"Mr. Trump soon replaced Mr. Tillerson with Mike Pompeo, who has promised to bring back the State Department's swagger and import", the article said.

Abe also said such an opportunity could only follow successful talks between Kim and U.S. President Donald Trump next month, which would raise expectations for an overall resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula. It is our policy to concentrate all efforts into economic progress ...

Trump hopes to convince Kim to abandon his nuclear weapons and the missiles that can carry them.

But having a robust diplomacy set-up will be crucial for what Trump wants to achieve next: a deal that dismantles the North Korean nuclear program, as well as their chemical and biological programs, and a peace deal for the Korean Peninsula.

Pompeo once used the word PVID (permanent, verifiable, irreversible dismantlement) to highlight the importance of permanent denuclearization, sparking media speculation here about Washington's intentions, but the Trump administration has returned to the CVID jargon.
