Homeland Security Director Kirstjen Nielsen Nearly Resigns After Trump Blow Up

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen is pushing back against a report that she told colleagues she was close to resigning Wednesday after President Trump scolded her at a cabinet meeting.

The White House declined specific comment on whether Trump berated Nielsen, her assumed resignation letter and on whether Trump maintained confidence in Nielsen, who shot at DHS in December.

In recent weeks, Nielsen has announced measures aimed at deterring illegal migration, including criminal prosecutions for parents who cross the border illegally with their children.

The president's eruption was witnessed by Cabinet members plus a number of senior White House officials - including counselor Kellyanne Conway, advisers Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, immigration adviser Stephen Miller and chief economic adviser Larry Kudlow.

Trump reportedly railed against Nielsen on Wednesday, saying that she failed to adequately secure the U.S. border.

"The president is rightly annoyed that present loopholes and the dearth of Congressional motion have prevented this administration from absolutely securing the border and defending the American individuals".

"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweeted Homeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton.

While border apprehensions dipped past year to their lowest levels ever, the numbers have been ticking up in recent months, returning to more typical historical levels.

Trump's outburst was not only aimed at Nielsen, according to the Times, but the entire cabinet for not making enough progress in stopping illegal immigration and ensuring border security.

The president's anger was stoked by Lawyer Normal Jeff Periods, who remarked that the Division of Homeland Safety may simply arrest individuals on the border, the supply stated.

This has not been the first time Trump has berated his cabinet officials.

The president also complained about the continued failure of his administration to find a way to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico, two people familiar with the episode said.

"These are complex issues and I will continue to direct the Department to do all we can to implement the President's security-focused agenda", she added, without saying anything about resignation plans.

Trump has also been frustrated with Nielsen, according to people familiar with the dynamic.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who pushed for Nielsen - his former deputy - to be DHS secretary, told reporters Friday that he expects her to stay on the job. Nielsen not too long ago labored with state governors to ship contingents of Nationwide Guard troops to assist safe the border after Trump known as for them to take action. The president urged Nielsen to be more aggressive, the official said.
