E. Coli Outbreak Reaches Minnesota, With Ten Cases Reported

Four new sates have reported people getting sick, including Florida.

Romaine lettuce shouldn't be sold, purchased or eaten unless it can be confirmed that it's not from the Yuma region, said Kirk Smith, manager of the health department's foodborne, waterborne, vector borne and zoonotic diseases section. Illnesses reported in the last 2 to 3 weeks may not be included due to the time between when a person gets sick with E. Coli and when that illness is reported.

The 2018 romaine lettuce E.Coli outbreak has sickened 121 people across the United States.

"We are investigating dozens of other fields as potential sources of the [tainted] chopped Romaine lettuce", Harris said. Symptoms include diarrhea that can be bloody, severe stomach cramps, and vomiting.

Minnesota, North Dakota, and Texas have also reported recent illnesses, the CDC said. One person from California is dead as a result of the infection. The others ate romaine lettuce at home, or in prepared salads purchased at grocery stores, restaurants and fast food chains, before their illnesses occurred. So, if you are not sure, it is better to be safe than sorry. It may be that a more virulent strain of E. coli is to blame, she said, or that the lettuce was contaminated with many bacteria. People typically fall ill two to five days after exposure, and most recover in five to 10 days if they don't develop complications.

Though the contaminated lettuce is thought to come exclusively from the Yuma area, another two dozen farms are under investigation, and the FDA now believes that only the Alaska illnesses were related to Harrison's romaine.

The romaine lettuce products we're selling on our shelves are not from the Yuma growing region.

As far as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the kidney failure that can make E. coli infections fatal, that count is up to 17.

The condition can be life-threatening in between 5 percent to 10 percent of people infected. "Our romaine is sourced from Salinas, California, where there have not been any reports of contaminated lettuce".
