Punjab Police to review security of 'govt VIPs' after Ahsan Iqbal Attack

"Shooter is only a vehicle, those patronizing them, those inciting them for political gains and those using them to settle score are real culprits", Maryam Nawaz Sharif, daughter of former premier, said in her tweet after the attack on Iqbal.

The 59-year-old Iqbal is a USA -educated politician long associated with the party Sharif previously led, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

Iqbal, 59, was shot in the right arm as he prepared to leave a public meeting in his constituency in Punjab province late Sunday.

Meanwhile, police have booked suspect Abid Hussain, 21, under attempted murder and terrorism charges of Pakistan Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act.

"Doctors are operating upon Mr Iqbal to take out a bullet from his stomach".

The gunman, the attacker was arrested, his identity and the motive of the crime yet no information is available.

The Station House Officer of the Shah Gharib Police Station has been suspended for providing inadequate security arrangements to the interior minister, Geo TV reported. The suspect has reportedly been taken into custody, according to police.

The row had sparked a three-week sit-in last November, paralysing Islamabad.

On the other hand, medical officials were considering to constitute five-member medical board comprising two surgeons, two orthopedic surgeons and one medicine specialist for further consultation on Iqbal's treatment.

Both the party's leader and Pakistan's prime minister have condemned the attack, which comes just months ahead of an expected election.

At the time many Pakistanis and analysts warned that a unsafe precedent had been set in which fringe groups could bend the state to their will by citing blasphemy, a highly inflammatory charge in the conservative Muslim country.

Thankfully, the people standing around the assailant overpowered him before he could fire a second shot at his target.

Inspector General of Police Punjab retired Capt Arif Nawaz said the police have also been probing involvement of any facilitators in the incident.

A US-educated lawmaker from a political family long associated with the PML-N, he is considered the brains behind the party's development agenda and previously headed up the planning ministry.
