Justify wins Kentucky Derby

Not since Apollo in 1882 had a colt won the roses without racing as a 2-year-old.

Saturday he lived up to the analogy.

As for Justify's challengers at Pimlico, don't expect to see too numerous 19 horses he bested at Churchill Downs on Saturday.

Justify, who became the sixth straight favorite to win the Derby, may have felt like a sure thing just before the race at 3/1 odds but was a completely unknown entity to the horse racing world just a few months ago.

Mike Smith earned his second Derby victory, becoming at 52 the second-oldest winning jockey.

Good Magic's sire, Curlin, won the Preakness in 2007 after finishing third at the Kentucky Derby.

Justify beat out a talented field of 20 horses to win the 144th Kentucky Derby.

They teamed to win Justify's second race on March 11 in the mud, foretelling his ability to handle what he would face at Churchill Downs on the first Saturday in May.

"I'll invest some of it, obviously", she said. "It took a great horse to do what he did today". Promises Fulfilled went to the lead, but Justify never let him get away.

"Right now I'm thinking just keep him healthy", he said.

But truly standing out among all the owners was Kumin, who had scored a double, snaring both the Oaks and the Derby in one weekend, the first time any owner had done that in more than 60 years.

This year, Justify was the pari-mutuel favorite who returned $7.60 to win for every $2 wagered.

"I didn't tell them I'd think about it", Baffert said of the telephone invitation he received from Preakness officials, via the Associated Press. He'll run in the Preakness and after that, we'll see.
