Israelis fire tear gas, warning shots at Palestinian protesters on Gaza border

Youths rolled burning tyres to within 500 meters (yards) of the fence, using the smoke as a screen to counter Israeli sharpshooters on the other side.

Every year on May 15, Palestinians all over the world hold demonstrations to commemorate Nakba Day, which marks the anniversary of the forcible eviction of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homeland by Israelis in 1948.

The protesters were calling for the right of Palestinian refugees and their descendants, who according to the United Nations make up around two-thirds of Gaza's population, to return to their homeland inside what is now Israel.

Despite Hamas's tight control of the media in Gaza sufficient photographic evidence is now available to show that numerous demonstrators attacking the border fence with Israel are armed with firebombs, kites carrying incendiary devices and booby traps.

Palestinians headed into the seventh week of demonstrations as part of the "Great March of Return" on Friday, as protest organisers chose to highlight the plight of workers in the Gaza Strip. "If they don't allow us back, at least they should give us a state". Among the dead are two Palestinian journalists Yasser Murtaja and Ahmed Abou Hussein, both men were shot by Israeli army snipers despite pictures showing "PRESS" emblazoned across the front of their protective jackets.

Anas Abu Asser, 19, who was shot during last Friday's "Great March of Return" in Gaza city, had been "seriously injured", Efe news reported citing the Ministry's spokesman. While the peace talks are stuck, Israeli settlements in the occupied territories have expanded.

The move has deeply angered the Palestinians, who see the Israeli-annexed eastern sector of Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Visiting the Middle East earlier this week, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo Pompeo lent his support to Israel's handling of the border protests.
