Liverpool icon Gerrard confirmed as new boss of Glasgow Rangers

Steven Gerrard will be a "success" in management after being confirmed the new boss of Rangers, according to his former Liverpool team-mate Dietmar Hamann.

Rangers are now third in the Scottish Premiership - three points behind Aberdeen but 22 points adrift of Bendan Rodgers' side, who have already won the title. But at least they have three or four months more than the others.

"I'm pretty sure Celtic supporters don't think, "Thank God, Steven Gerrard". Clubs of this size with the stature, history and tradition.

"He was extremely impressive throughout our negotiations and we are convinced that he has the necessary knowledge and temperament to lead the club to the success we all desire".

It won't be easy but an incredible club with an incredible fan base.

One fan tweeted: "Gerrard doing everything he can once again to stop Rodgers winning a league title".

Gerrard made 710 appearances for his boyhood club during 17 years at Anfield.

Gerrard joins the club at a hard time in the Glasgow rivalry, five days after Celtic beat Rangers 5-0 to win its seventh straight league title.

"When the call came it was a no-brainer for me".

But Souness, who played for and managed both Liverpool and Rangers in the 1980s and 1990s, believes Gerrard is fortunate to have been headhunted for the role.

Gerrard had previously coached in Liverpool FC's youth academy after his retirement following the 2016 MLS campaign. I'll do my very best. I've watched big managers, I can't do anything about not having experience but I have the right characteristics to take on the challenge.

'In football if you're working under pressure, you're in a good place. I didn't enjoy the result from a Rangers point of view but I've been here and sampled the atmosphere before.

Today, Gerrard was introduced to the press and his message was clear - this was an opportunity too big to turn down.

They'll really be hoping Gerrard can improve the team immediately and get them competing with Celtic on all fronts next term.

Liverpool Echo's James Pearce has reported that Fowler is a "strong contender" to take over Gerrard at the clubs under-18 level.
