Sabres to select No. 1 overall in 2018 NHL Draft

Of course, Vancouver also needs a blueliner more than they need a winger anyway. "We're bringing in a No. 1 overall talent to this group".

The Hawks, who missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years, entered Saturday night with the seventh-best odds (6.5 percent) to capture the top overall pick. Already having Jack Eichel in the mix and last year's first-round pick Casey Mittelstadt showing great potential, Dahlin should be the cornerstone defenseman Buffalo sorely needs. "But there always is that excitement and that attitude, the No. 1". "I'm just very, very happy for our fanbase". The Canes were slotted 11th until the Flyers made the big jump.

The Montreal Canadiens need offence and the third pick should be Filip Zadina of the Halifax Mooseheads.

By virtue of the unveiling of numbers 15 through 4, we now know the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes each have earned their ticket to ride the Rasmus Dahlin Rollercoaster.

The Sabres finished 25-45-12 and ranked last in numerous offensive categories.

The draft takes place June 22-23 in Dallas.

With the top pick, the Blue & Gold could select the top defenseman in this year's class, Sweden's Rasmus Dahlin.

Russian forward Andrei Svechnikov of Barrie in the Ontario Hockey League is also considered a top five pick.

The top-rated USA -born prospect is Boston University forward Brady Tkachuk, the son of former National Hockey League star Keith Tkachuk.

Montreal general manager Marc Bergevin said the team is looking for a player who will make an immediate impact, regardless of whether he gets there via draft or trade. Most importantly, the Hurricanes won a lottery.

"It's not a good feeling because you went through the pain of a season to get a lottery pick, so it's not a fun season, but you've got to look ahead, not behind", Bergevin said.

Ranger fans can immediately breathe a sigh of relief that Dahlin will not be playing for a Metropolitan Division team (if the Sabres do what every hockey insider thinks they should do).
