NFL Draft 2018: SoCal QB exports Darnold and Rosen

If you're drafting Sam Darnold, it's based on what he can be, not on what he is.

But the sudden skyrocketing of Mayfield's status allowed Darnold to "drop" into the Jets' laps.

Darnold threw for 4,143 yards and 26 touchdowns last season. "I'm going to work as hard as I'm going to work". Last year's starter, Josh McCown, was re-signed, and the team added former Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater in free agency.

"No", Darnold said. "I'm just going work the way I normally work".

The Cleveland Browns will kick off the draft, and have two of the top four selections. It cost NY the No. 6 pick, two second-round selections this year and a second-rounder next year — a steep price to pay, but one general manager Mike Maccagnan was comfortable with. "We felt very happy that Sam was there and we had a chance to pick him".

Darnold, the third overall selection of the Jets in the National Football League draft on Thursday night, became the latest former USC quarterback to land in the top-10, shouldering similar high expectations as a potential franchise-changing pick in a new city.

With the NFL Draft starting Thursday, six Trojans wait for their name to be called in Dallas. The High School All-American and Orange County Offensive Player of the Year (67.8 completion percentage, 2,996 yards, 39 touchdowns, eight interceptions) also excelled at basketball and baseball, even though he missed time with a broken foot (suffered during football) and a broken finger.

Sanchez was supposed to be the future when the Jets selected him with the fifth pick of the 2009 draft.

"There's no timetable", Bowles said.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller has Darnold as the No. 5 overall player on his big board, while Rosen checks in at No. 8.

That will ultimately be the way Darnold's career in NY will be measured.
