ZTE says USA ban will 'severely impact' its survival and partnerships

Analysts said a worst-case scenario could entail Huawei suffering the same fate as smaller Chinese rival ZTE which has lost access to USA -made components as well as Google Android software in a similar probe.

Agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which is overseen by the Justice Department, have been looking into transactions by the Shenzhen, China-based mobile and telecommunications giant, the people said. Now, the Wall Street Journal reports the government is taking more direct action against the Chinese technology giant.

According to the report, the Department of Commerce has agreed to receive new evidence from ZTE through an informal procedure. Now ZTE has spoken out on the subject, saying that the ban will "severely impact" its survival going forward.

Earlier this month, the Commerce Department banned ZTE, China's second-biggest network equipment maker, from buying US -made components as punishment for violating a sanctions settlement over transactions with Iran and North Korea.

On its part, Huawei says that it complies with all applicable laws and regulations in the countries where it operates.

In April 2017, the New York Times reported the Office of Foreign Assets Control and the Department of Commerce had issued subpoenas to Huawei during the previous year. In addition to producing networking gear and other electronics, it was the globe's No. 3 smartphone seller a year ago behind Samsung Electronics Co. and Apple Inc.

In February, Senator Richard Burr, the Republican chairman of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, cited concerns about the spread of Chinese technologies in the United States, which he called "counterintelligence and information security risks that come prepackaged with the goods and services of certain overseas vendors".

Schloss, the Huawei spokesman, said those allegations aren't true.

Major US telecoms companies have already steered clear of the two Chinese firms, sometimes on the strong suggestions of US officials. The Wall Street Journal says that the worse- case scenario facing Huawei is a similar US export ban.

In a 2016 letter to the Commerce Department, 10 US lawmakers said F7 was believed to be Huawei, citing media reports.
