China to push membership preference for annual Eurasia summit

India's foreign minister, Sushma Swaraj, did not show support for the project as foreign ministers of the China and Russia-led Shanghai Cooperation Organisation met in Beijing - an organisation which India and Pakistan joined past year.

India had its name excluded from the list of SCO members, which backed the BRI.

Foreign ministers from the group were also meeting in Beijing on Tuesday and a heads of state summit is planned for June in the Chinese port of Qingdao.

The English daily even termed the meeting as significant as the one between former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and then Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping in 1988.

Kang said that he can not predict what the leaders will specifically talk about but "I believe that you will get very positive messages (on the issue of protectionism)". "Second, they want to meet before the summer, when many worry tensions between both armies in the mountain areas could rise again as the weather is less hostile". The meeting between the two top leaders will be held in Wuhan in China, the hometown of the Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui. They have said this signifies the importance Beijing attaches to ties with New Delhi, which experienced chills over a host of issues a year ago, including the Doklam standoff. That was a time when India and China actually reopened relations after a two-decade deep freeze and a face-off in Sumdurong Chu that could have become very ugly.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China later this week to hold "informal summit" talks with President Xi Jinping. In her address, Sushma Swaraj said the SCO member states have been connected historically through shared commonalities and her country was committed to working with the group to strengthen economic and investment ties. "They will also exchange views on overall, long-term and strategic matters concerning the future of China-India relations". "The two countries need more communication to enhance mutual trust and eliminate the possibility of another border crisis", The Global Times, considered the official Chinese media, commented on Tuesday.

The summit was good news in the short-term for investors in Asia, Mr Kumar said.

He also claimed that Pakistan was China's all-weather friend and wished to see China play a greater role in global and regional affairs.
