Southwest gives $5000 checks to passengers on flight 1380

Tim McGinty told reporters late Tuesday that he helped his wife and a friend put on their oxygen masks before he realized the woman sitting in the row in front of him was in trouble on the Southwest Airlines plane from NY to Dallas that made an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

"SWA does NOT support the CFM comment on reducing compliance time to 12 months", Southwest Airlines wrote in a comment available on the federal website that allows companies and individuals to comment on proposed new rules.

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will issue a directive in the next two weeks to require ultrasonic inspections of CFM56-7B engines after reaching a certain number of takeoffs.

The National Transportation Safety Board also blamed metal fatigue for the previous engine failure on a Southwest plane in Florida in 2016 that was able to land safely.

No blame has been assigned to the airline for the engine explosion which sent a piece of shrapnel flying through the window next to Jennifer Riordan, according to the Daily Mail. Sumwalt said the plane touched down at about 190 miles per hour, while a jet of that size would typically land at around 155 miles per hour.

The Federal Aviation Administration's announcement late Wednesday comes almost a year after the engine's manufacturer recommended the additional inspections, and a month after European regulators ordered their airlines to do the work. The metal fatigue would not have been observable by looking at the engine from the outside, Mr Sumwalt said. She said the company had satisfied the terms of the CFM service bulletin but did not immediately answer questions about how many engines had been inspected and whether the failed engine had been inspected.

However, Mr Martinez was attacked by some social media users for his decision to livestream the incident, which they saw as violating the privacy of other passengers on the flight.

The two pilots of Tuesday's Southwest Airlines Flight 1380, Captain Tammie Jo Shults and First Officer Darren Ellisor, released a statement saying their "hearts are heavy".

Southwest announced its own program for similar inspections of its 700-plane fleet over the next month. An engine cycle lasts from when an engine starts until it shuts down. That covers more than 700 737s, including more than 500 737-700s.

Airlines across the USA will feel the effect of whatever AD is put into place regarding the inspection of the CFM engines.

In addition to the money, passengers will get a $US1000 ($1300) travel voucher "as a tangible gesture of our heartfelt sincerity", according to the letter, which was signed by Southwest president Gary Kelly.

A fan disk came apart inside the engine, cutting through the plane's hydraulic system and disabling all flight controls. The fiery crash killed 111 people. Further investigation showed that the crack existed at the time of the engine's previous inspection but wasn't detected. United Airlines had begun inspections on some aircraft as of Wednesday, April 19.

"I feel for her family", Needum said. "It's going to take some time to determine what happened, unless it's really obvious".

The NTSB is focusing on preventive measures, Sumwalt said.

"We're not there just to serve you a Coke".
