Trump to Russia: "Get ready" for USA missile strikes on Syria

US President Donald Trump has warned Russian Federation to "get ready" for missile strikes as tensions escalate over the alleged poison gas attack in Syria.

An attack on Syria, which President Trump threatened by tweet Wednesday, would be delivered by missiles instead of manned warplanes, and it could backfire, according to Loren Thompson, a defense industry consultant and military analyst at the Lexington Institute, a think tank.

Trump's condemnation of the apparent chemical assault on the rebel-held Syrian town of Douma raised the prospect of US military retaliation nearly a year after he ordered a cruise missile strike on a Syrian air base after a similar poison gas attack.

Prior to the tweet, Russian Federation said its air defenses would shoot down any incoming missiles and that its forces would retaliate against the source of any attacks.

"It was filmed on the H shaped building at [geographic coordinates] 33.573900, 36.404831, which we've confirmed by geolocation", said Bellingcat founder Eliott Higgins.

In response, Trump tweeted that America's relationship with Russian Federation "is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War".

Eurocontrol issued the Rapid Alert Notification, warning airlines to be ready for the possible launch of air strikes into Syria with air-to-ground and/or cruise missiles within the next 72 hours.

Trump later suggested the "bad blood" between Washington and Moscow has been caused by Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller's ongoing federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

Peskov added there were no plans for Putin to call Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron or UK Prime Minister Theresa May amid the crisis.

Meanwhile, the Syrian government has put its forces on "high alert" amid the looming threat of a United States military response.

The officials declined further comment and it was not clear whether the Syrian moves would impact U.S. military planning for potential action against Syria over a suspected poison gas attack, Reuters reported.

That's likely a reference to United States smart bombs that, typically, can evade missile-defense systems and then precisely hit a target.

The 2,000 USA troops in Syria advising local forces on defeating Islamic State militants would be vulnerable to missiles, artillery and other attacks, the former official said. "Stop the arms race?" he wrote.

The jihadist group is fighting to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad's regime and establish a caliphate.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph has reported that British submarines are being moved within "missile range" of Syria - and that military action could start on Thursday night.
