Britain calls for United Nations meeting on OPCW nerve attack findings

She said Moscow will continue to press Britain to share evidence in the case.

The worldwide chemical weapons watchdog on Thursday confirmed Britain's finding that a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned last month with a nerve agent, as Russia continues to deny it was behind the attack.

Britain has called for an OPCW meeting next week to discuss the results of the organization's report. She said the Security Council meeting "will most probably be on Wednesday afternoon".

The watchdog made no assessment of who was to blame for the March 4 attack, which also affected Sergei Skripal's daughter Yulia and a local policeman.

Moscow has hit back by expelling Western diplomats, questioning how Britain knows that Russian Federation was responsible and suggesting it stemmed from a plot by British secret services. "This was a military-grade nerve agent of high purity".

The Novichok class of nerve agents was developed in the Soviet Union toward the end of the Cold War, and Britain says it has evidence Russian Federation has continued to manufacture Novichok agents in the last decade. Russian Federation denies any involvement, saying Britain hasn't provided evidence to support its assertion. British foreign manager Boris Johnson even pointed directly to newly re-elected Russian president, Vladimir Putin, as person who gave order of poisoning.

According to the report, "the toxic chemical was of high purity".

"There can be no doubt what was used and there remains no alternative explanation about who was responsible".

The worldwide chemical weapons watchdog has confirmed Britain's finding that a former spy and his daughter were poisoned with a nerve agent.

Moscow denied any involvement and suggested Britain had carried out the attack to stoke anti-Russian hysteria, but Britain asked the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to check samples from Salisbury.

"The chemical weapons watchdog did not explicitly name Novichok in its published summary, say where the poison may have come from or assign blame for the attack".

In a published summary of its findings, the OPCW did not name Novichok, the type of nerve agent previously cited by British Prime Minister Theresa May.

It does not identify the source.

Russian Federation has denied possessing the nerve agent used, while President Vladimir Putin has said it was nonsense to think Moscow would have poisoned Skripal and his daughter.

The OPCW report comes as Yulia turned down help from the Russian embassy in a statement issued through Scotland Yard yesterday to say that she was "safe" and trying to come to terms with her new life.

Russia's Embassy in London is questioning the authenticity of a statement attributed to one of the victims of a nerve agent attack in England, saying it has been crafted to support Britain's version of events.

Yulia Skripal, who was released from hospital on Monday, said in a statement she was still suffering effects of the poisoning and her father remained seriously ill.

It says British authorities "must urgently provide tangible evidence that Yulia is alright and not deprived of her freedom".

The 33-year-old Russian citizen has been taken to a secure location after being discharged from Salisbury District Hospital earlier this week.
