Russell Crowe's 'divorce auction' of memorabilia rakes in $3.7m

Among items he admitted he struggled to part with, Crowe pointed to the concert violin, made in Milan in 1890, he used in duets with his friend, ship's surgeon Stephen Maturin, in Master and Commander.

Crowe livestreamed the auction on Facebook, and bids were taken by Sothebys Australia in person, online, and by phone from around the world.

Stunt cuirass worn by Crowe when his character Maximus died in the 2000 film Gladiator - $125,000.

A replica Roman chariot from the actor's film Gladiator was sold for $65,000.

From among the 226 items on offer, the toughest bidding wars were for props and costume pieces from the film Gladiator.

A pair of black leather wrist cuffs from the same film were also snatched for $32,000, while two life-sized prop horses were also up for grabs. In an interview with Page Six, Sotheby's Australia Head of Arts and Design, Guy Cairnduff, said Crowe was intimately involved with the design of the auction.

A pair of 18th century dueling pistols fetched $26,000 or roughly $20,000 Dollars, and a 2001 Mercedes S-Class that served as a wedding vehicle in Crowe's April 2003 nuptials to Spencer - and has more than 62,000 miles - sold for $28,000 AUD or roughly $21,000 USD.

There was also fierce competition for his Cinderella Man jockstrap, which went for A$7,000 (€4,371), more than 10 times the estimate.

After a nine-year marriage and a subsequent six-year separation, the Oscar victor and the singer/songwriter are making it official by signing the divorce papers. While it was expected to bring in between $500 and $600, the garment was won by a telephone bidder for $7000.

Similarly, some art, including a 17th century Flemish tapestry estimated at $25,000 to $35,000 and a 1921 landscape by the well-known Australian painter Penleigh Boyd, estimated to sell from A$60,000 to A$80,000, would appeal to a buyer who'd never heard of Crowe and his many blockbusters.

Some of the pricier lots include a diamond-encrusted 18ct white gold ring ($70,000 - $100,000), a painting by renowned Australian artist Charles Blackman ($200,000 to $250,000), and the 1986 Grammy Award presented to several musicians, including Johnny Cash and Roy Orbison, for the "Class of '55 Recording Session" ($200,000 - $300,000).

It wasn't clear how much money Crowe raked in, but according to estimates, he was going make anywhere between 2.6 to $3.7 million. The items had an 85 percent clearance rate, and all winning bids were topped with a 22 percent commission fee.
