GALLIGAN: NCAA Final Four Predictions Include Louisville Advancing in OT

The way this showdown ended recalled UConn's last loss, nearly exactly a year ago to Mississippi State (who punched their own ticket to Sunday's final game in the night's first awesome, overtime game).

The Huskies were two wins shy of a 12th national championship under Auriemma, and for the second year in a row, the Huskies failed to make the national championship game.

Ogunbowale and Jackie Young led the way offensively for Notre Dame, scoring 27 and 32 points, respectively.

Friday's game tipped off at 9:53 p.m., about a half hour after Mississippi State earned its spot in the final with an overtime victory over Louisville, and nothing came easy for UConn.

After going on a run in which it won four consecutive national titles, the UConn Huskies have seen their season end in the national semifinals each of the last two seasons. The Irish chipped away until they took a brief lead with 2:21 left in the period. "There are no bad teams".

UConn and Notre Dame would play four times a season, heightening the intensity of one of the best rivalries in women's college basketball. I think I'll remember this one just a little bit more. Arike made a great, great play. The Irish will be looking for the program's first national championship since 2001.

A roller coaster of emotions doesn't even begin to explain Friday's contest between Notre Dame and CT. Young led Notre Dame with 13 points at halftime and had the support of 10 points from Shepard, but the Huskies got hot and carried that momentum into the second half.

"I tried to get a good shot", she said. After Notre Dame turned it over with 3.6 seconds left in regulation, Gabby Williams' runner was short, sending the game to overtime.

It wasn't long ago Geno Auriemma and Muffet McGraw were constantly on each other's minds.

"We've been very fortunate for the most part to get those kids that come out of high school, and they want to be coached the way I coach, and they're not afraid to walk into our building and look up at the walls see those names and see those banners, and go, 'I got this, '" Auriemma said.

Collier finished with 24 points for the Huskies. After the Irish missed a pair of foul shots and Samuelson corralled the rebound, Dangerfield tied the game at 89-89 with a three-point shot with 26.5 second remaining. A victory would give Notre Dame its second national title.

The loss does give him one hollow win: He was right about what he's been saying all week about it getting harder and harder to win a title as the competition gets better and the struggle to stay on top gets harder.

Mississippi State's Teaira McCowan has 18 points and 18 rebounds.

Stat of the game: Notre Dame was the more aggressive offensive team for all 40 minutes, and it helped put the Irish at the free throw line, where they shot 19-of-23.
