Palestinian Teen Activist Ahed Tamimi Sentenced to 8 Months in Prison

Her sentence would include time served and a fine of 5,000 shekels (USD 1,430), said Tamimi's attorney Gaby Lasky, meaning she could be released in the summer. Nariman Tamimi also was charged with incitement to terrorism on Facebook for posting the video of the incident. She reportedly will plead guilty to four counts of assault, including the one in which she slapped a soldier in front of her house, which was videotaped and went viral on social media. Jewish American comedian Sarah Silverman, actor Danny Glover and NFL football player Michael Bennett are among those who called for her release.

Tamimi was charged with violence against Israeli security forces, and can be seen in a December video pushing and kicking two soldiers. Both are reported to have accepted plea bargains.

Israeli soldiers opened live fire and fired rubber-coated steel rounds at Palestinians who were protesting about Israel's decision to confiscate large tracts of land near the village for opening a road connecting Israeli settlements in the area. He argued that holding the trial in secret would be in the best interests of the teenager, though her family and lawyer said it was not.

Tamimi accepted the sentence as part of a plea bargain following a case which has sparked uproar in the Middle East and attracted worldwide attention.

Tamimi's mother, Nariman, and a cousin were also arrested.

Yet, like all military courts in the West Bank, the work of the juvenile court judges boils down to signing off on plea bargains reached between the defense and the prosecution outside the courtroom, which the minors have no choice but to accept. Trials, in which the prosecution must present evidence and the defendant has a chance to refute it, are rare.

A plea deal for Nariman Tamimi would also be for eight months in jail including time served, she said.

Tamimi, who was 16 at the time of the offence, has become a Palestinian hero and a symbol of the struggle against Israeli occupation.

Bassem Tamimi said he spoke to his wife and daughter for 45 minutes on Monday, using a telephone as they sat on the other side of a window. The organization and Tamimi's advocates argue that there is a double standard for authorities prosecuting West Bank residents because Israeli settlers are tried in civilian courts while Palestinians are tried in military courts.

Tamimi's family says the December 15 incident that led to the arrests occurred in the yard of their home in Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah in the West Bank. The Israeli military confirmed the details of the deal.

It said a series of reforms meant to improve the conditions of minors have had little impact and that they still are frequently cut off from their parents or lawyers, and coerced into admitting to crimes. The announcement was almost unanimously rejected by the global community and by Palestinians across the world.
