Germany 1-1 Spain

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has paid tribute to his players following Friday's 1-1 draw with Germany in Dusseldorf.

In a mouth-watering showdown between the most recent two world champions, Spain took an early lead through Rodrigo before Thomas Muller smashed home an unstoppable equaliser 10 minutes before the break.

The two teams then go on to face further high-profile friendlies next week, with Germany taking on Brazil in Berlin and Spain hosting Argentina in Madrid.

Spain travelled to Germany, playing out an entertaining draw, in what was undoubtedly more competitive than a friendly fixture that it was supposed to be.

"We can learn a lot from tonight, that's why we wanted to play against teams like Spain and Brazil".

"The team is on a very good path and these games help us to continue growing to be at the optimum level when the World Cup arrives".

Spain dominated the early stages and opened the scoring in the sixth minute.

Mueller spotted Spain goalkeeper David de Gea off his line and unleashed a superb strike which hit the top left-hand corner from 20 yards out.

Germany were looking to go in front for the first time after the break but David de Gea showed why he is so in-demand with a stunning save to deny Julian Draxler.

Germany continued to attack with Timo Werner firing into the side-netting and Mats Hummels heading a Toni Kroos free kick off the crossbar.

Inter Milan full-back Miranda scored the opener while Barcelona midfield pair Philippe Coutinho and Paulinho scored one apiece at Moscow's renovated Luzhniki stadium where the World Cup final will be played. The quality of the game was exquisite, the only disappointing part was that there wasn't enough goals for both the teams.

With that in mind, Lopetegui named a strong side - as did Germany counterpart Joachim Low - which included a 150th global appearance for Sergio Ramos.

"We were playing against the best team in the world now, a team with a lot of motivation and we've felt it".

"We knew that Spain are hard to defend against, you have to nearly defend against them man-to-man".
