Apple Confirms Siri Bug That Exposes Notifications Will Be Fixed

On the iPhone X, notification previews are hidden by default and details are shown only after Face ID authentication.

With Apple's notification system, users have the choice of displaying a preview of the notification when they receive it, or hiding it so that anyone who glances at their phone won't be able to see the contents of the notification until they unlock their device.

But it turns out there's a very simple way to read these hidden notifications even if you can't unlock the phone: Just ask Siri to read them to you.

The site verified that the bug is in both iOS 11.2.6 and the beta of iOS 11.3.

The issue has been reported to Apple, which will hopefully fix it sharpish.

It's particularly concerning that this affects Signal notifications, as the app is primarily favored for its encrypted messaging features that provide extra security. Siri bypassing the iPhone's lock and hidden notification setting is of major concern as users might have personal and confidential information on their WhatsApp, Gmail or even Slack. In a statement on the matter provided to MacRumors, Apple said: "We are aware of the issue and it will be addressed in an upcoming software update".

iOS 11 has been plagued by a number of bugs and security-related issues since it was released last year, which has lead to speculation that Apple is planning to nix significant updates to iOS this year in favour of focusing on stability and security. However a recent Siri bug circumvented that protection.

Protect Yourself: To hide message content on the Lock screen, click Settings Notifications, choose the app.

Users can disable Siri when iPhone is locked.
