Apple could be in heaps of trouble because of rising iPhone prices

The next-generation iPhone X will cost less to manufacture than Apple's current flagship smartphone, which now costs 00.

According to Taiwanese trade publication, DigiTimes, the new 5.85-inch iPhone X features an MBOM over 10% less than the current model.

The weak demand for iPhone X, saw the company pulling in a lot fewer OLED panels from Samsung Display than it had committed earlier.

Let's assume that Apple intends to offer the upgraded iPhone X for the same price that the current iPhone X sells for - $999 for the baseline configuration and $1,149 for the one with more storage. Because of that, some may have presumed that Apple is done with flirting with OLED screens and that the iPhone X may have been a one-time thing.

Apple is reportedly gearing up for a trial production of its next generation iPhone due out later this year, hoping to avoid low yield issues that were seen with its iPhone X. The new range is expected to be much cheaper than the £1000 handset, while still offering similar premium components.

An Apple sales associate speaks with a customer waiting to purchase a new iPhone X in NY, U.S., November 3, 2017.

Apple is using a secret facility in California to develop MicroLED screens for the Apple Watch and iPhone, Bloomberg reports, with plans to replace third-party OLED screens in several years. Apple now offers its highest end iPad Pro tablets in two screen sizes - 10.5-inches and 12.9-inches. However, the project was suspended in mid-February and must have been eventually terminated later on.

Apple now designs chips for its mobile devices and a move into displays could hurt screen makers like Samsung Electronics Co, Japan Display Inc, Sharp Corp and LG Display Co in the long term.

According a report by Digitimes, the 5.8-inch OLED variant of the 2018 iPhone will be cheaper to manufacture. But there's still no confirmation on when Apple will employ its own displays on its iPhones.

The top of the line will use an OLED display too, quite a large one – 6.45”. The iPhone-maker now sources OLED panels from Samsung Display for the iPhone X.

Lin also believes the 5.85-inch OLED iPhone may be the cheapest of the three new devices. Then again, it won't be a true successor of the iPhone X. The sooner Apple can deliver that improvement, the better it'll be for the competitive positioning of Apple's iPhone X series of smartphones.
