British Red Arrows Hawk crashes in RAF Valley

A jet belonging to the British military's Red Arrows aerobatic team crashed today at an air base in Wales, killing an engineer and injuring the pilot, the air force said.

North Wales Police is appealing to anyone who may have seen the Red Arrows Hawk aircraft which crashed on Anglesey this afternoon to contact them.

Miraculously, the pilot, believed to be David Stark, according to the Mirror, managed to survive the crash after ejecting from the plane with just seconds to spare.

A ministry statement said a Hawk aircraft used by the Red Arrows crashed, but gave no word on possible casualties. "We are investigating the incident", it said on Twitter.

The Red Arrows aircrew had been at RAF Valley for routine Hawk simulator training, which takes place once a month.

At RAF Valley on the island of Anglesey, wreckage from the jet could be seen close to the runway. "The Coroner for north west Wales will also be informed".

The RAF is asking eyewitnesses with photographs of the incident to send them in to help with the investigation and not share them online.

Group Captain Nick Tucker-Lowe said a Red Arrows engineer had been killed in the "tragic accident" and the pilot was receiving medical care.

Defence secretary Gavin Williamson added: 'Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of the RAF engineer at this incredibly sad time'. "Then it looked like it was about to land, then next thing I saw was the parachute and then the plane hit the runway and went up in flames".
