Ashraf Sehrai replaces Syed Ali Geelani as Tehreek-e-Hurriyat chairman

After 17 years, Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been replaced by Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai as the interim chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH), an important constituent of Geelani-led faction of Hurriyat Conference (G). "The decision was taken after Geelani chose to step down", they said. "So today I willfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise the Shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest", he said. Due to huge support from the separatist constituency in Kashmir, the Jamaat was forced to make peace with Geelani and became a member of the TeH and Geelani-led Hurriyat Conference.

It is said that Senior Hurriyat leader Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai will succeed SAS Geelani as the chairman of the party. "Sehrai will take over as the interim Chairman till the elections are held later this year", a spokesman of the party said. He extended his fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization.

Geelani was also under great pressure of Pakistan and the new generation of local terrorists who have started raising fingers at him by accusing him of selling dreams to the youth.

However, in 2010, Jamat-e-Islami (JeI) suspended Geelani from the basic membership of the party over the "adverse" remarks made against his parent outfit in a new controversial biography.

The NIA has named 10 other Kashmiri separatists including Hurriyat leader Syed Shah Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmed Shah. Tehreek-e-Hurriyat knows what to do after my death. He was one of the accused in the Kashmir terror funding case.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference split up in 2002.

He is credited to have worked as a "foot soldier" in JeI in the trying times.

While addressing advisory body meeting of the party, Geelani said from last 8 years of continuous house arrest and restrictions by authorities on interactions with party colleagues has dented the functioning of the party.
