Prez Trump fires Federal Bureau of Investigation official for unauthorised disclosure to media

In earlier tweets, the president also berated former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe, who was fired by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday just two days before he was due to retire, and former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey, whom Mr Trump sacked a year ago.

Trump tweeted that he "spent very little time" with McCabe, and "he never took notes when he was with me". "And is this because they corroborate James Comey?".

United States media say the memos will support Mr Comey's account of the circumstances of his dismissal last May.

The firing threw new fuel on the fire raging over the investigation, with critics saying Trump might be planning to engineer Mueller's dismissal, potentially sparking a constitutional crisis.

That investigation began under FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired previous year.

Outspoken conservative actor James Woods won the internet on Saturday when he weighed in on former CIA Director John Brennan attacking President Donald Trump over the firing of former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe.

Mueller is also scrutinizing Trump as he investigates whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

Graham, a co-author of legislation that would make it harder for a president to fire a special counsel, said it was very important that Mueller be allowed to proceed without interference and that many Republicans share this view.

Dowd, who is the primary point of contact between Trump and the special counsel, initially said he was making the statement in his capacity as Trump's attorney, but later walked that back and said he was acting in his own capacity and not on Trump's behalf.

"As the House Intelligence Committee has concluded, there was no collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump Campaign".

"They want him to be able to finish the investigation", said Sen.

"The only reason that Mr. Mueller could be dismissed is for cause".

"Analyze McCabe firing on two levels: the substance and the timing", tweeted the only sitting Cabinet member in US history to be held in contempt by Congress.

McCabe, who was sacked by Attorney General Jeff Sessions days before his retirement reportedly for a "lack of candor" under oath about authorizing conversations between FBI officials and the press, criticized his termination as part of an "ongoing war on the FBI and the efforts of the special counsel investigation, which continue to this day".

The firing was followed by reports that McCabe kept personal memos detailing interactions with the president.

Trump on Sunday went off in another series of tweets about the recent events.

Comey was a target Sunday when Trump claimed that Comey lied under oath at a Senate hearing in 2017, shortly before his firing, when he said he had never been an anonymous source. It was the appropriate decision given the reports of his having leaked internal information to the media and then giving false information about that misleading information to those investigating the matter.

Comey has previously discussed how he felt prompted to write memos due to the boundary-crossing exhibited by Trump.

Mr Comey has testified that Mr Trump had asked him for his "loyalty" and requested he drop an inquiry into his disgraced former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Comey's much-anticipated new book will offer an account of his career in government, which included overseeing the Hillary Clinton email probe, as well as the ongoing FBI investigation into whether Trump's 2016 presidential campaign colluded with Russian Federation.
