Woods produces old magic at 17th hole, but falls short of win

Paul Casey closed with a 6-under 65 and won the Valspar Championship, but only after watching from the locker room as Tiger Woods came up one putt short of forcing a playoff.

Casey, who started the final round five shots behind, ran off three straight birdies early on the back nine at Innisbrook to take the lead, and he closed with four par saves to post at 10-under 274.

But Woods could not replicate the magic at the par-four 18th, where he missed a hard 40-foot birdie putt that would have forced a playoff with Casey at the Innisbrook Resort. As many are aware, The Valspar Championship at the Copperhead Course is not known for being one of the top tournaments on the PGA schedule.

USA Today wrote that the finish could bode well for Woods as he moves on this week to the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill, Florida, and the Masters, April 5-8. Patrick Reed had a great chance to win outright, but was unable to birdie the last hole and ended up making bogey.

Woods' fusion surgery ended a brief comeback bid past year.

Woods energized the crowd following him by draining a dramatic 43-foot, 8-inch putt at the 17th hole to climb within one stroke of Casey with one hole to play, according to PGATour.com. "Do your thing!" yelled another.

That left Woods as the only man who could catch the leader, but the former world number one was only able to make par at the end of a largely frustrating round featuring just two birdies and a solitary bogey.

Woods lifted his golf club into the air and touched the bill of his cap in response, before raising his hat fully off his head and waving as the ovation grew louder. "As a whole, I felt very good about what I did this week". "Getting better. Thank you for all the support". Tiger Woods had flashes of his old self. That was the best-rated Round 3 of a PGA Tour event on any broadcast network since 2006, and the best rating for the Valspar tournament ever. As I was telling you guys yesterday, I had really some nice building blocks at Honda (where he tied for 12th two weeks ago) and I've had a few tweaks for this week and it paid off.
