Trump highlights talks with European Union over `unfair´ tariffs

These were "not fair to our farmers and manufacturers", Trump added, though the European Union could not immediately confirm any formal approach by Washington.

According to Malmstrom, the Trump administration is using trade "to threaten and intimidate" Europeans, and that trade has become "a scapegoat".

But Trump said on Twitter on Saturday: "The European Union, wonderful countries who treat the USA very badly on trade, are complaining about the tariffs on steel and aluminium".

Fox criticised the unilateral imposition of USA tariffs, which will impose a 25 per cent duty on steel imports and a 10 per cent tax on aluminium imports, and said that they "have weak foundations in global law".

The association said in the letter that it applauds the administration's efforts to rebalance trade and protect the USA steel industry and workers, but it is concerned that global import tariffs on steel and aluminum would have a devastating effect on steel-consuming manufacturers downstream, including the auto care industry.

"Big Deficit. If not, we Tax Cars etc", wrote Donald Trump in Twitter.

Trudeau also said it was in part due to the hard work of Canadian officials that Trump exempted Canada from the tariffs last week.

Malmstroem said talks would continue this week.

Michael Dolega, economist at TD Economics estimates that about 5,000 to 10,000 jobs could be added to steel and aluminum production in the US, but there could also be a loss of 25,000 to 50,000 jobs in metal-intensive sectors like machinery and transport equipment.

The announcement of duties of 25 per cent on imported steel and 10 per cent on aluminium has stung the European Union and other major partners, coming as a surprise to allied countries and to many in Washington.

Trump added that European countries are banding together to "screw the US" on trade. We believe that protectionism is a dead end, " French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire told reporters.

While some countries in the World Trade Organisation may be considering action, Mr Turnbull said the exemption meant Australia did not have a basis to bring a complaint.

"The EU market is one of the most open in the world and if anyone starts throwing stones, it's better first to make sure he is not living in a glasshouse".
