2 deadly package bombs in Texas are linked

The attacks unfolded just as the Texas capital was swelling with visitors to the South By Southwest music festival. The Austin-Travis County E.M.S. "It seemed to be a non-festival related incident so I instantly relaxed", she said. Though he did not say festival goers should be overly anxious, he stressed the importance of "if you see something, say something".

Manley said that while investigators are still searching for a motive, the incidents are under investigation as possible hate crimes because the victims in both cases are African-American. "He says there's now no other evidence indicating a hate crime beyond the victims' race", the AP reports.

That explosion was followed shortly by a blast at another home several miles away. Both packages exploded as the residents opened them inside. The explosions happened far from the main events of the festival, and there was no immediate word from organizers about additional safety precautions being taken.

The first Monday blast was reported at 6:44 a.m.in the 4000 block of Oldfort Drive and the second Monday blast was around noon in the 6700 block of Galindo Street.

Neighbor Keith Reynolds heard what sounded to him like a propane explosion.

Virginia Ybarra, who lives on the block where the blast happened, says the women who lives in the house is quiet and kind, and sometimes asks for grapefruits from her tree.

McManus said in a news conference he has been in contact with Manley, who shared that Austin PD has been receiving a lot of calls from people across the city reporting suspicious packages.

Authorities had said they believe the first two explosions are linked. It's not known if the victims knew each other or if they were targeted, he said.

According to authorities, the packages exploded when the victims went outside and picked the packages up from their doorsteps; USPS, UPS or FedEx did not deliver them. A 70-year-old woman was injured in that blast.

A 39-year-old man was killed in the March 2 attack.

Two parcel bombs rattled the USA city of Austin on Monday, 10 days after a similar deadly blast, as Texas police said they were investigating the possibility the attacks were serial hate crimes.

Both the ATF and the FBI have joined the Austin PD in the investigation.

The three explosions occurred in different parts of east Austin, which is east of Interstate 35, the highway that divides the city.

The package detonated early Monday. A woman in her 40s was also caught in the explosion and hospitalized with serious injuries. There are about 15 miles (if walking) between the first explosion and the last. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Austin police's homicide tip line at 512-477-3588, or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. Police did not want to give detailed descriptions of the suspect packages, saying any unexpected package could be deemed suspicous.
