Davidson upsets URI en route to NCAA Tournament

The games begin on Tuesday night, with two of the play-in contests. The A-10 title game will be played at 1 p.m. on WPRI-12. The sophomore point guard didn't commit a turnover in 32 minutes, his ninth error-free game of the season. The Wildcats would NOT have made the 68-team field if they had lost.

"We have championship culture, championship DNA, and we showed it today", URI coach Dan Hurley said.

No. 25 Rhode Island 90, Saint Joseph's 87. Saint Joseph's piled up 47 points by halftime (the most in the opening 20 minutes against the Rams this season) to lead by seven, and still nursed a 70-65 lead on Nick Robinson's layup with 8:43 left. Ruthie Polinsky will be in Washington, D.C. where the Rams are in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

The Rams never trailed in the final 5:42, jumping ahead for good when Russell knocked down a 3-pointer from the left corner to make it 76-73.

"I know some of the teams on the bubble probably aren't that happy with us right now, but we're playing for something", said A-10 rookie of the year Grady, who led Davidson with 17 points. Jeff Dowtin wound up trying a 3-pointer that missed.

Top-seeded Rhode Island (25-7), though, will be in the bracket despite coming up short in its try for a second conference tourney title in a row.

Rhode Island: After dropping three of their last five regular-season games, the Rams manufactured tight victories over VCU and Saint Joseph's to reach their second consecutive Atlantic 10 title game. That's just silly, that a guy would take away a kid's chance to fire up a half-court shot. They're poised to contend in the Atlantic 10 again next season.

Points in the paint were controlled by Saint Joseph's, with 40 points, compared to Rhode Island's 28.

Davidson: Needed this victory for an NCAA bid, given that it entered the A-10 tourney with an RPI of 74, a 108th ranking in strength of schedule and a 3-6 record against Quadrant 1 teams.
