Turkish-backed rebels advance on Kurdish-held Syrian town

Meanwhile, the NTV broadcaster reported that the Turkish Armed Forces had entered the central districts of Afrin together with the Free Syrian Army.

"We are removing the last remaining obstacles standing before our besieging of Afrin city centre".

The State Department spokesperson on Thursday said talks between Turkish and American officials have begun in the US capital and many issues will be discussed including Syria and Turkey's ongoing operation in Afrin. Where there are terrorists, we'll be there, he added.

Cavusoglu said the operation could begin after Iraq's parliamentary elections scheduled for May 2018, signalling that Turkish forces may move to northern Iraq following the ongoing operations in northern Syria.

The Turkish Army and pro-Ankara militias have kicked-off the most critical phase of their Olive Branch operation against Kurdish forces in Aleppo province - the assault to seize the city of Afrin, Al-Masdar News reports.

Erdogan reiterated Turkey's firm determination to advance to Manbij and other YPG-held locations east of the Euphrates River, once the operation on the Afrin enclave is completed.

Turkey has been waging "Operation Olive Branch" against Syria's Afrin region since January 20 in a bid to eliminate the YPG, which forms the backbone of the so-called Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) that enjoys USA support. As of now, we have Afrin encircled.

Turkey sees the YPG as a "terrorist" group. The Turkish launched "Operation Olive Branch" in Syria's northern regions against the Kurdish Popular Protection Units forces and the Syrian Democratic Forces which control Afrin.

Yesterday Turkish soldiers captured the strategically significant area of Jinderes Hill after heavy clashes with the Kurdish militia. The Turkish government views the YPG as a terror organization and the Syrian branch of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militant group.

Relations between North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies United States and Turkey have been strained over a number of issues, notably the U.S. arming of the YPG.
